Ice clings to branches: life clinging to life. The one will melt while helping the other to grow… … such is life. Crosses adorn the doors of white steepled churches, Welcoming happy singers. The parking lots are full, So are the graveyards beside them… The pungent smell of cattle drifts through the air. Heifers feed their young without thought. In a year, the young will be on the grocers’ shelves, Their mothers bred for repetition… Wild turkeys peck the ground for gravel And eat seeds that fell last year. Soon , they’ll be fleeing from hunters’ guns. Some will end up as feasts for those who brag about the hunt… Young buds on trees will sprout into leaves And shelter baby birds, which other birds will eat. The leaves will fall in their own time, Decay and become food for the living… Well known words float around in my mind: “Don’t cling too tightly to life.” There are no bargains to be made.
